Treating a herniated disc in my neck without surgery
I went to my general doctor because I was experiencing some neck ache, he promptly gave me muscle relaxer and painkillers. This went on for about a week, and then I woke up and couldn’t move my left arm our head without excruciating pain. I went in for a MRI; this is when they discovered I had a herniated disc “C6” in my neck that was pinching on my nerve that ejected my left arm. During the time I waited for test results front the MRI, I was given a stronger pain pill that pretty much put me to sleep, and when I woke I was in terrible pain. I was then sent to a Neurosurgeon, who quickly responded with “NECK SURGERY” was necessary and if I didn’t have it soon I could loose total muscle control in my left arm (that was just numb and hanging there in pain). Let me explain quickly about the procedure he described, they go inside your neck though the front of your throat (leaving a 2inch scar on each side of my throat) and take out the disc and replace it with a CADEVER bone. At this point I was scared to death, I have 2 wonderful children and a Super husband, I’m very young and I couldn’t imagine how this would change our lives. The recovery period would be about 3-6 months. I couldn’t imagine how this would change our lives. We left this office with fear and questions.
On top of all this we had a family vacation that was planned for a year and a half that I was told I couldn’t go without taking all kinds of pain pills. We had to call our friends that were going on vacation with us to inform them about what was happening Thank God for that phone call, because our friends the Bertram’s said they had gone to this wonderful Dr, Grunert who was a Chiropractor and they thought that before I did anything permanent I should go see him.
I first saw Dr. Grunert on Thursday March 9th. When I walked very slowly into his office (because of the intense pain) my arm was totally numb at this point and I couldn’t move my head left to right and I couldn’t sleep at all. I explained to Dr. Grunert that I could not function at home and take care of my kids so my mom did and my husband took off work He gave me an exam and said He was sure he could help. NO SURGERY, that is what kept running through my head!!!!! He manipulated my neck on the first visit, and gave electrotherapy massage. After this I instantly felt some relief I couldn’t believe this relief so quickly, Dr. Grunert warned me that it might not last long because of the seriousness of my injury. He set a goal that he would like to see me go on vacation pain free. Wow what a goal! No Surgery and Vacation?
We set up a plan to see him every day for a week to see what could be done. Dr. Grunert went above and beyond the norm of a Doctor’s practice, he opened the office on Saturday, and Sunday to see me and make sure I could get some relief and have a better life. THANK YOU Dr. GRUNERT!!!!!
The office secretaries are the most wonderful and caring people, they always make you feel special and that they truly care about how you are feeling, I’ve never had to wait a long time for service, they try to make all of your appointments convenient for your personal schedule. After 1 week of treatment I was moving my hand, arm and neck. I went on vacation and enjoyed my family and friends. I’m continuing my treatment plan with Dr. Grunert and Dr. Barry. Because of them I can lead my life without pain.
